Falls from heights continue to be a leading cause of workplace fatalities and injuries. According to the latest data, over 60% of fatal falls occur from ladders, scaffolds, working platforms, roof edges, or through fragile roofs. Between 2015 and 2019, falls accounted for 13% of all worker fatalities, resulting in 122 deaths each year. Additionally, in 2017 alone, there were 44,400 non-fatal falls from height across all industries—equating to 121 accidents per day.
To help prevent these devastating incidents, it’s crucial to provide employees with proper fall protection training and equipment. Raising awareness about the risks of working at height is key to reducing the number of accidents. Employers should ensure that employees are not only aware of fall hazards but also that they are properly trained in using fall protection systems and personal protective equipment (PPE).
Equally important is the ongoing inspection of fall protection equipment. Regularly check all PPE, including harnesses, lanyards, and guardrails, for wear and tear. Any damaged or expired PPE should be removed from service and destroyed to prevent accidental use.
By investing in fall protection training and equipment, companies can significantly reduce the risk of falls, protect their workers, and comply with OSHA safety standards, ultimately fostering a safer work environment for all.
